ep 11 | the astrology of habits: how to use habits as self-care with Kelly Carlson
If you want to learn about the astrology of habits and how you can work with them as self-care, this podcast is for you!
Kelly Carlson is a certified habits and empowerment coach and the host of the One Bad Habit podcast.
Kelly is a Gemini Sun, Taurus Rising, Cancer Moon
In this episode, she and Lynnette discuss the power of habits, how they show up in your astrological chart, and how to connect with Saturn to make sure that you don’t live your life according to “shoulds”.
Kelly opens up about her rock bottom experience that transformed her view of habits, self-care, and body image and talks about her approach to changing habits one by one, little by little. Habits aren’t just something we should do, they are daily actions that we can choose with intention to honor and uplift ourselves.
Lynnette and Kelly also get astrological, talking about where habit and routine is in your birth chart, what it means to have empty houses in your chart, and making friends with Saturn, the planet of responsibility.
- How our cultural background can shape our views on habits and self-care
- The astrology of habits and how they can be used as self-care
- The importance of choosing one habit to focus on at a time
- How trying a new habit for a set period of time can help us decide if it’s something we actually like
- The importance of understanding why we want to take on a new habit
- How to change our perspective on habits
- Kelly’s intuition and connection to Spirit
- The importance of finding balance between our North Node and South Node
I started to realize that habits aren’t really, like I am, staying in affirmation every day or like I have this really beautiful aesthetic, like morning routine. It was really just how each week in small ways can I choose myself and how I can honor myself. And it doesn’t really matter what that is. – Kelly Carlson

I just felt like I was left with like, I don't
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:02
know who I am or like, how did I get here?
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:05
Like, why am I so sad?
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:07
And am I just so sad now?
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:10
Or I'm just being forced to recognize the fact that I haven't really had or made
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:16
decisions that are aligned with what I want my life to be and who I want to be.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:20
And I just, hadn't been asking myself those questions
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:25
And so I just started with each week picking like really one small thing that
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:30
I could do, because I was like, I can't do anything for eternity, but like I can try
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:35
something for a week and see if I like it.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:37
And I started to realize that habits aren't really, like I am,
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:42
staying in affirmation every day or like I have this really beautiful
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:47
aesthetic, like morning routine.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:49
It was really just how each week in small ways can I choose myself
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:54
and how I can honor myself.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:55
And it doesn't really matter what that is.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:00:58
our habits, they say are who you are, our behavior and actions, are
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:01:01
reflection of how we see ourselves through ourselves in one way or another.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:01:07
Um, and I think also a reflection of boundaries of what we allow
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240 00:01:10
people to take and what we wanna give and like that energy exchange.
lynnette_1_07-30-2022_143239:
Speaker:what were some of those small
lynnette_1_07-30-2022_143239:
Speaker:habits that you did for one week at a time when you first started?
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Oh, my gosh.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Well, my very first one was eating almonds in the morning.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:But so what I would do is I think for a week I would write down a lot of all
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:my self doubting thoughts that I would have throughout the day, about anything.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And then I would write a sentence to counter that or like honor the fact
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:that it's something that I'm working on.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And so like for a while, my Instagram hashtag for one bad habit at a time was
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:#loveallyourlumps because I was like, you know, this is my body and it's
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:carrying me through and I'm working hard to figure out how to take care
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:of myself and what that means to me.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And that has really helped me transition my view on my body, a lot.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And I feel like every habit I chose each of those week, whether it was like almonds
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:or that rewrite your narrative exercise, or even, I remember I tried keto and like
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:failed at it, cuz I didn't understand what keto was It was all with the intention
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:of like, how can I lend myself some love or like what would be like nourishing
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:and honoring to me, and experimenting.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And if it doesn't work, like the keto thing, like it's okay.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:The whole thing is just figuring out what works for you.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And that was also, I think like a big thing that I would reiterate to
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:myself is like, I'm figuring out what works for me and that's what matters.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:I really think the negative Connotations for me always feels like society.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Like when I'm like in my room or cut off from the world in any regard, some
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:of those shoulds go away cuz we're not seeing or like idolizing all of these,
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:I would say like perfect routines or perfect lifestyles and so there's
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:just so much pressure to, to be that.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Cuz sometimes I'll try it and I'll be like, I actually hate that.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:that does not work with my lifestyle or how I wake up in the morning or my
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:nighttime routine, is that honestly it's like, if you find it interesting or
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:maybe something you wanna do, like maybe give in to the pressure and try it and
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:then the rewire is if you don't like it or it does not feel healing, it doesn't
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:feel good, you don't feel like it's a win after you do it, then, you know?
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Okay.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Maybe that was just because, you know, Hailey Bieber was doing it and she
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:looked so elegant as she was, you know, doing that whole routine then that
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:she described in her InStyle magazine interview and understanding that
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:all of us have habits and routines.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:Cause it's so easy to get caught up in the noise of the shoulds.
kelly-carlson_1_07-30-2022_133240:
Speaker:And so it is just really trying to break through what actually is noise.
